Frequently Asked questions

What services do you offer?

1

We group our services into two main areas: Executive Functioning Coaching and Therapeutic Consultation (a service via the Virginia DD Waiver).

Executive Functioning can focus on specific tasks such as study skills, daily transitions, work-related goals, and other daily tasks.

Therapeutic Consultations under the DD Waiver allow for work with the caregiver or individual with the goal of improving life skills.

What makes Restoration & Recreation different?

2

Unlike many providers who focus on a single diagnosis or treatment method, Tory brings nearly 20 years of dual expertise as a Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist and Executive Functioning Coach — working with the whole person, their family, and their support system to create real, lasting change. Her holistic, relationship-based approach means strategies don't stay in the session room — they carry into daily life, making every interaction an opportunity for growth and connection.

Beside her is a team of equally passionate professionals who share her commitment to quality of life, ensuring that every client who walks through the door receives the individualized, compassionate support they deserve.

Which service is right for me?

5

That’s a great question! Why don’t you reach out to us - either through our contact form or by scheduling a call. That way, we can best understand your situation and help guide you.

Do I need a diagnosis to work with you?

6

No! While we have extensive experience working with individuals who have developmental diagnoses, brain injuries, or other neurological differences, you don't need a formal diagnosis to benefit from our services. If you or your loved one are struggling with daily functioning, social connection, or emotional regulation, that's reason enough to reach out.

Do you accept Insurance?

7

If you are using a DD Waiver, your services are completely covered.

For Executive Functioning Coaching clients: no, we don't accept insurance.

We do not work directly with insurance companies or provide codes regarding diagnosis or services. Some of our clients have used their Flexible Spending Account/Health Savings Account (FSA/HSA) benefits to help pay for coaching services. FSA/HSA providers have varying requirements or approval processes.

We encourage clients to contact their FSA/HSA provider to see if our services qualify as an approved use of those funds. If they qualify, the client can ask that (your business name) be added to the FSA/HSA provider’s approved vendor list. Some of our families have successfully used 529 Plan college funds to pay for coaching services. Please contact your 529 Plan provider to see if that can be an option for you.

We can provide a statement for families that are getting reimbursed by school districts. This includes dates of services and payments received.

Understanding
Our Services

Still have questions? Ready to learn a little more? These are some of the more detailed questions we get:

  • Both! We can craft a plan and program that is comfortable and enjoyable for you, whether that is in person or virtual.

  • We work with both children and adults. Whether you're a parent seeking support for your child, a young adult navigating independence, or an individual looking to improve your quality of life — there's a place for you here.

  • Both — and often together. We believe that lasting change happens when everyone in a person's life is working toward the same goals. Sessions can include parents, family members, and other professionals so that the strategies built in sessions carry into everyday life at home and school.

  • Every person's journey is different, and progress is gradual and cumulative. Most clients begin to notice meaningful changes within the first few weeks as new strategies start to take root in daily life. The goal isn't a quick fix — it's building skills and habits that last.

  • Executive functioning is the set of skills your brain uses to get things done — planning, organizing, managing time, regulating emotions, and following through.

These skills develop throughout childhood and into early adulthood, and when they're a challenge, everyday life can feel like an uphill battle.

Coaching helps build real, usable strategies that carry over into school, work, and daily life.

  • Executive Functioning (EF) Coaching is the science and art of guiding learners to strengthen their own capacity to get things done.

Please review this article or watch this Youtube video for an in-depth explanation on what Executive Function Coaching is and how it can help your family member.

  • Sessions are collaborative and personalized — there's no one-size-fits-all program here. Each session typically includes a check-in on the week, a review of goals and what's working, hands-on skill building, and a clear action step to practice before the next session. For younger clients, sessions may be more activity-based; for adults, they tend to be more reflective and conversational.

  • Please review this article on how to talk to your child about Executive Function Coaching. Within it, you will find a sample script for addressing common concerns.

  • As a parent, you control many aspects of your student’s life – where they live, what they eat, their curfew, etc. This unequal power dynamic can make your student very sensitive to your feedback.

By having an objective professional help them with the challenges of school, it can free up space to focus on building a healthy dynamic with your student.

However, if you do want to try implementing these techniques with your student, we suggest going through this free course on how to build executive function skills.

  • Recreation therapy uses meaningful activities — like games, movement, and creative pursuits — as clinical tools to improve a person's emotional, social, and physical wellbeing. The goal is simple: when people have purposeful ways to engage with life, they heal and function better.

  • Licensed Professional Counseling is a mental health profession in which trained, licensed clinicians help individuals work through emotional, psychological, and behavioral challenges through structured, evidence-based talk therapy.

An LPC has completed a master's degree in counseling, accumulated thousands of supervised clinical hours, and passed a rigorous licensure exam — making it one of the most credentialed pathways in the mental health field. That training equips them to assess and treat a wide range of mental health conditions, including anxiety, depression, trauma, grief, relationship difficulties, and more.

At Restoration and Recreation, our licensed counselors bring that clinical expertise together with a genuine commitment to meeting each client where they are — honoring their background, beliefs, and individual experience every step of the way.

LPC vs. other mental health professionals:

    • Psychiatrists are medical doctors who can prescribe medication but typically do not provide ongoing talk therapy

    • Psychologists hold doctoral degrees and often focus more heavily on psychological assessment and testing

    • Licensed Clinical Social Workers (LCSWs) share some overlap with LPCs but often focus more on connecting clients to community resources and systems

    • Recreation Therapists use activity-based interventions rather than talk therapy as the primary clinical tool

If you're ready to take the first step, our counselors are here to help — in a space that is safe, confidential, and entirely yours.

  • The DD Waiver is a Medicaid-funded program that helps eligible individuals with developmental disabilities receive services and support while living in the community.

If your loved one receives DD Waiver services, Therapeutic Consultation may be covered as part of that funding. Contact us to learn more about whether your loved one qualifies.
